Mushrooms, Health Benefits

January 6th, 2009

Mushrooms have a great source of health giving benefits. Button mushrooms, those little white mushrooms, Have a host of  antioxidants that fight against cancer.

Studies have shown that button mushrooms increase vitamin D in the body which strengthens the bones, makes them  and especially valuable to those living in northern climates where sunlight (the body’s main source of vitamin D) is in short supply due to the long winters.

Mushrooms can be used in a large array of recipes from soups to casseroles and even salads.

Winter Blues Cold and Flu.

January 5th, 2009

The last few weeks have brought pain and misery to a lot of people, ruining Xmas for many.

The Noravirus flu is still rampant with no signs of abating yet. Put together with the nasty enteritis bug it has been a miserable time for those who contacted them.

For those of you below the age of the free flu injection I would advise you to think seriously about paying for this injection if you have manage to stay free of the flu up to now.

It can be done by chemists for the cost of £15 and it is a small price to pay for your health.

As Flu seems to come around every year it would be a good thing to put the flu injection on your early Xmas list as a present to yourself, it is a very early warning for next year to save another Xmas being ruined.

The strain of flu that is following on from this one is even more virulent, it can turn into Pneumonia and even death can occur. It is said to be resistant to antibiotics and the usual cold and flu remedies and there is no known cure.

This years flu outbreak is said to be worse than the spanish flu that killed thousands of people.

Medicals for Drivers

January 1st, 2009

Well we have reached the end of the festivities but not the flu outbreak.  It is still as bad as ever with doctors surgeries packed to capacity almost every day.

Instead of rushing to the doctors, bed is the best place with plenty of fluids to keep you going.  If you get a chest infection then you might need antibiotics, but the over use of these is lessoning the inpact of them.

A bit more news is that they are now considering ten year medicals for drivers.

Motorists may have to undergo health tests every 10 years to ensure they are fit to drive under new plans reportedly being considered by the Department for Transport. As eye tests will be included this could be a good thing for everyone.

Flu and colds

December 29th, 2008

Well the festive season is almost over but not the dreaded flu and colds season.  Flu and colds are treble this year and the worst since the end of the last war.

If you feel yourself coming down with the flu the get yourself off to bed  with plenty of liquids to help flush it away. Lemon and honey is good, you can make it yourself quite easily and add hot water to it.

If you have no one to look after you then fill a flask with it to keep it hot and regularily take sips of it.

One of my companions on my bedside table is a jar of vick, its a great help if you find breathing difficult. Take pain killers and keep warm.

There is not a lot the doctor can do for you unless it gets on your chest then a visit to the GP may be needed as it can turn into an infection quite easily.

New Year Resolutions

December 27th, 2008

The New year is almost upon on us and thousands of people will be making New Year resolutions with the best of intentions.

Although I am in 71st year I have never made a New Resolution during my life time, simply because if I made one then I could never break it, and who knows what is in the future.

I would love to say my resolution is to give up smoking, but I can’t do that because although I know I should, my will power isn’t strong enough.

A resolution is a promise, even though it is a promise to yourself it should not be broken. So it is better not to make them than to fail miserably and feel a failure.

Christmas Lunch A Health Hazard

December 23rd, 2008

Oh No!  Now the health campaigners are saying our Xmas lunch has twice the recommended salt intake.

Researchers from the group Consensus Action on Salt and Health said the levels found in each course of a typical Christmas Day lunch would be dangerous if eaten everyday.

To start with, who could afford to eat Xmas lunch every day?  Well maybe the wealthy people amongst us can but I’m sure they don’t bother. After all it wouldn’t be special if it was eaten every day,

If we followed all the recommendations by these people who think they know best we would end up by being a nation of downright miserable  and skinny people.

We might all be healthy!  We might all be fit and slim but what else would we have in our lives?

No slimming classes, no gyms because we wouldn’t need them. No fatty foods, no chocolate, just the odd drink because too many would be fattening.

Are the researchers going to far with all the recommendations they keep coming up with?

Anyway what ever they recommend I am sure we will all enjoy our festive Xmas lunch and the chocolates and mincepies that are all part of Xmas, yes we will put on a bit of weight but hey! you can always go on a diet after Xmas or give the gym an extra visit.

Enjoy Xmas and have a great time its only once a year.  Merry Christmas every one.

Health Giving Properties of Dandelions

December 21st, 2008

It is true, Dandelion leaves are a great source of health giving properties.  The common and garden Dandelion leaves contain magnesium, niacin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, gluten, proteins, resin, iron, sulphur, zinc, vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E, and vitamin A.

A great tonic is dandelion tea, it is made from the roots or leaves. It stimulates the body and gets rid of the waste and toxins.

The leaves of the dandelion are rich in magnesium which improves bones and increases bone density, so it is thought that they may actually help with bone disorders like osteoporosis.

Dandelions help the liver and gall bladder to break down fat, by stimulating the flow of bile which helps to prevent gallstones.

They also help the liver with its process of detoxification which is good for diseases such as hepatitis.

December 20th, 2008

Chinese Wolfberries are like a super food they contain over 15 percent protein, 21 essential minerals and 18 amino acids.  There is substantial evidence that wolfberry have significant antioxidant and immune-supporting properties.

Analyses have found that wolfberries contain 18 types of amino acids, 21 trace minerals, 29 fatty acids, vitamins B1, B2, B6, E, more beta carotene than carrots, more Vitamin C than oranges, and as much protein as bee pollen.

They have been around for thousands of years and  Chinese Wolfberries have been used to treat a wide range of illnesses, and it is known  that the people who ate them regularly lived long and  healthy lives up to the age of one hundred or longer.

Studies done by the Chinese government have shown that Chinese wolfberries are extremely useful for boosting the immune system, protecting the liver, improving the quality of blood, and improving vision.(3,4,5,6)

Does Sneezing Mean Sexy Thoughts!

December 19th, 2008

My thoughts are that some of these researchers talk a load of tripe.  They say that some men and women sneeze when they have sexy thoughts or a sexual fantasy.

So if your stood at a bus stop or on a train and someone sneezes, it won’t be cold thats causing it but sexy thoughts.

Just hope its a good looker or you’ll be turned off, but then you never know you might start sneezing yourself.
